Courts Have Contempt for the People They Serve
I was raised in an environment where people are forgiven their mistakes. A young girl age 18 gets pregnant. Though she is 18 she has the mental maturity of a 13 year old. The baby comes along, the father abandons and the girl is neither mentally prepared or financially prepared to take care of the child. Court comes and takes the child (a good thing). Girl is now 20 and wants to get her baby back. Court sets up criteria which includes a psychiatric evaluation which revealed girl is bi-polar and has the mental capacity of a 15 year old. Not the kind of person prepared to take care of a child. Furthermore, the court orders her to pay child support payments which she is willing an wants to do. However, she can't drive so her only alternative to go to work is to take the local bus service. So she gets a job at a local pizza parlor but gets fired because the local bus can't get her to work on time. Now she has no way to make her child support payment so the court throws her in jail for non payment. She borrows $300 to get out of jail and the court sees that in a negative way. Everyone knows we live in a period where it is hard for anyone to get a job much less someone who doesn't have a reliable way to get to work. Every job application asks the question do you have transportation to work. Does the count make any effort to help this mentally challenged girl? NO NO NO! No forgiveness here! All the court can do is tell her she has to pay the child support payments or go to jail. Now someone needs to explain to me how sending her to jail helps the situation. More tax money is spent to house and feed her which in the long run takes tax money away from caring for the child. I know the courts deal with a lot of dead beats and therefore their strict policies. This girl's mental challenge creates extenuating circumstances that the courts ignore. This in my opinion is contempt for the girl's need and rights by the courts. We citizens are not allowed to have contempt for the courts but the courts are allowed to have contempt for us. Here is what the courts should do: They should contact the father and order him to pay both child support and support for the girl. They should arrange for the girl to enter a mental counseling program and attempt to treat her to a level of maturity that would make her able to take care of the child. If they insist that she pays the court child support, they should provide her assistance in obtaining employment and transportation so she can make those payments. At the very least they could give her a job in the court's janitorial services and let her work off the child care there. Still, all this is not a solution. If the girl finds employment, it will most likely be minimum wage which will not change her situation of not being able to take care of the child. If they are successful in improving her mental maturity and give her the child back, she will not be able to care for the child while she is at work, and she will not be able to afford child care. So why is the government (Courts in particular) not helping this girl? I believe I know but it is just speculation but comes from my own observations. First off, the father is an illegal alien from Mexico which is another government failure that even our federal government doesn't want to deal with so they don't want to go after him for fear that they will appear politically incorrect. Second off, the foster parents who are caring for the child want to adopt the child and the courts have decided to make that easier to accomplish by taking advantage of a mentally challenged girl. Finally, the girl comes from a very dis functional family who has had a past history in the court system and the courts just have contempt for the entire family. This girl may never be able to reach a stage where she will get her child back and that may very well be the best thing for the child. But the courts will have failed the girl and will someday have to answer either politically or before God for that failure. My final comments: Jesus said if your neighbor wants your coat, take it off and give it to him, love your enemy, be good Samaritan's and do unto others as you would have them do unto you. The courts by law are no longer allowed to believe in Jesus and follow his teachings but even if you don't believe in him, these are good philosophies to follow. The governement and the courts believe they have the power to pass the laws they want and also make themselves exempt from those laws. READ THE ANIMAL FARM BY GEORGE ORWELL!
